Full-Frame vs. Half-Frame: Understanding the Difference

If you're new to film photography, you may have come across terms like "full-frame" and "half-frame" when researching vintage cameras. Olympus is famous for producing both types, with the Olympus TRIP 35 being a full-frame camera and the Olympus PEN series using a half-frame format. But what do these terms mean, and how do they affect your photography? Let’s break it down.

What is Full-Frame?

A full-frame 35mm film camera captures images in the standard 36mm x 24mm format. This means that each shot takes up a full frame of the film strip, just like most traditional film cameras.

Advantages of Full-Frame:

Higher image quality with more detail and better sharpness.

Easier composition, as each frame is standard-sized.

Prints and scans match traditional 35mm proportions without cropping.

The Olympus TRIP 35, for example, is a legendary full-frame camera known for its sharp Zuiko lens, automatic exposure, and compact design. It’s an excellent choice for those who want high-quality images with a simple, point-and-shoot experience.

What is Half-Frame?

A half-frame camera captures images in a 24mm x 18mm format—essentially half the size of a full-frame image. This allows you to take twice as many photos on a single roll of film. For example, a standard 36-exposure roll will yield about 72 shots instead of 36.

Advantages of Half-Frame:

More photos per roll: Perfect for travel and everyday shooting.

Compact size: Half-frame cameras are generally smaller and lighter.

Creative diptychs: Since two half-frame images appear side by side on a standard film strip, they can be used for storytelling by pairing two shots together.

The Olympus PEN series is one of the most famous half-frame camera lines. Designed by Yoshihisa Maitani, the PEN cameras are compact, stylish, and ideal for street photography or travel. Their economy and ease of use made them incredibly popular in the 1960s and 70s.

Which One is Right for You?

Choosing between full-frame and half-frame depends on your shooting style and needs.

If you want to take high-quality photos and enjoy the traditional film aesthetic, a full-frame film camera is recommended.
If you want to take more photos per roll and prefer a compact camera, the half-frame PEN series is the best choice.
If you love storytelling through paired images, a half-frame camera allows for unique compositions.
Both formats have their own charm, and either choice will provide a wonderful film photography experience. Whether you're capturing everyday moments or trying film photography for the first time, Olympus cameras offer timeless quality and style.
