How Much Does an Olympus Trip 35 Cost? A Complete Price Guide (2026)

Search for an Olympus Trip 35 online and you'll see prices all over the map — $25 on one listing, $230 on another. Same camera, same year, sometimes even the same condition description. So which one should you buy? And why is the gap so large?

We've been buying, restoring, and selling Trip 35s in Tokyo for over six years. In this guide, we'll break down what each price level actually gets you — and share a few things about this camera that you can only learn by taking hundreds of them apart.

The Four Price Tiers

Let's look at what separates these tiers — because the differences are mostly invisible from the outside.

Tier 1: The $25 "As-Is" Camera

An untested Trip 35 is a lottery ticket. The seller hasn't verified anything: the shutter may fire, but that tells you almost nothing about whether the camera can take a properly exposed photograph.

Here's the uncomfortable statistic from our own buying experience: when we hand-pick cameras in person — inspecting each one by eye and by hand — about 80% have a working selenium light meter. When we buy untested lots online, that rate drops sharply. In a bad week, it can be as low as 50%.

And the selenium cell is the one part that matters most, because:

A dead selenium cell cannot be revived. There is no fix, no replacement part in production, no trick. Very occasionally a cell seems to "wake up" after light exposure, but this is genuinely rare. You may read blog posts where someone says "the meter needle still moves, so the selenium is alive!" — but a moving needle doesn't mean accurate exposure. Selenium cells usually weaken gradually, so "it responds to light" and "it meters correctly" are two very different claims.

Tier 2: "Film-Tested" — Better, But Still Incomplete

A film-tested camera at least proves the basics: film advances, the shutter fires, an image appears. That's real information, and it justifies the higher price.

But here's what a test roll doesn't reveal — and this is where six years of disassembling Trip 35s has taught us the most:

The hidden rear lens element

The Trip 35 (and the PEN EE series) has lens elements that cannot be seen from outside the camera. The front element can look perfect while an internal element is hazy — and haze on an internal element softens every photo the camera takes. The only way to know is full disassembly.

One pattern we've noticed: later-production Trip 35s, roughly serial number 3,000,000 and up, are more likely to have haze on the hidden rear element. Ironically, these later cameras often look the cleanest on the outside.

The cracked winding gear

Those same later-production cameras also have a higher rate of cracked film-advance gears. A hairline crack in the gear can work for a while, then fail mid-roll. Again: invisible without disassembly, and often present in cameras that look mint.

So a beautiful-looking, film-tested, later-serial Trip 35 can hide two serious problems that no external inspection will catch. This is exactly the kind of camera that gets resold as "excellent condition" — honestly, because the seller genuinely doesn't know.

Tier 3: Lightly Serviced

At this level, the seller has done real work: fresh light seals (moldy, crumbling seals cause light leaks in nearly every unserviced Trip 35), exterior cleaning, sometimes viewfinder cleaning, and a drop of solvent and oil at sticky points.

This is honest, useful work — but note what's missing: no disassembly. The aperture blades, the shutter mechanism, the hidden lens elements, the winding gears — all untouched and unverified. A lightly serviced camera is a good camera if it happened to be a good example to begin with.

Tier 4: Fully Restored — What "Restored" Actually Means

"Refurbished" and "restored" are words anyone can put in a listing. Here is, concretely, what a full restoration involves in our workshop. Each camera takes 3 to 4 hours of work:

Selenium cell verification and meter calibration. We test each cell against calibrated light sources at EV13 and EV15, measuring the current it generates (a healthy cell produces roughly 300–500 μA). Then we adjust the meter circuit — replacing resistors as needed — until the needle reads correctly. Not "the needle moves," but "the needle is right."

Aperture blade disassembly and cleaning. The aperture blades are removed, corroded blades are replaced, and oil contamination is washed away with naphtha. This matters because the Trip 35's exposure depends on the blades opening to exactly the right size — oily or sticky blades mean wrong exposure on every frame. And the blades simply cannot be serviced without disassembly.

Shutter speed testing. Every shutter is measured on a shutter-speed tester and adjusted until it's within spec. If it can't be brought into spec, we replace it.

Light seals. Replaced on every camera, regardless of apparent condition. No exceptions.

Lens inspection — including the hidden elements. Full disassembly lets us inspect every element. Light haze and fungus can often be cleaned; elements with permanent haze, fungus etching, or scratches are replaced.

The red flag mechanism. The low-light warning flag is the known weak point of the Trip 35 and PEN EE-2/EES-2. Rust and old oil in the mechanism frequently stop it from working, and a bent actuating lever will also disable it. Disassembly and cleaning is essentially mandatory here.

Zone focus verification. Every camera gets a final focus check and adjustment before it leaves.

Exterior. Even cameras keeping their original covering are fully cleaned — used cameras are dirtier than they look. For re-covered cameras, we have the leather skived (thinned) to the correct thickness by a professional leather craftsman, so the covering sits exactly as the original did.

So Which Should You Buy?

It depends on who you are:

  • If you enjoy repair as a hobby and own the tools, an as-is camera is a fun project — just budget for the ~20–50% chance the selenium cell is dead, and know that the hidden lens elements are a gamble.
  • If you want to shoot, not repair, the math favors a fully restored camera. Two or three $30 gambles plus shipping already costs more than the price difference — and you still might not end up with a working camera.
  • The middle tiers are reasonable if you accept the unknowns: the camera works today, but nobody has looked inside.

A fully restored Trip 35 isn't expensive because of the camera. It's expensive because of the 3–4 hours of skilled work, the parts cameras sacrificed for replacement components, and the duds — the cameras with hazy hidden elements and cracked gears that never make it to sale at all. When you buy restored, you're paying for all the cameras that didn't pass.

Is a $30 Olympus Trip 35 worth buying?
Only as a project. Untested cameras have roughly a 20–50% chance of a dead selenium meter, which cannot be repaired or replaced with new parts.

Can a dead selenium meter be fixed?
